We did try to be a lil' bit more adventurous with the local cuisine... loved the delicious Phở bò, the shrimp pancakes, springrolls (realized that it's Safer to stick with the fried version coz didn't like the 'weird' taste of some of the ingredients they added to the fresh springroll which is different the version we have in S'pore), banana dessert, vietnamese coffee (goes very well with chocolate cake)... but after 3 days of beef noodles, we were so happy juz to have the normal western fair. :P
Huế. Had a day of History class on our day trip to the ancient capital of Vietnam !! Huế (i think the pronunciation is similar to "回") was the national capital until 1945. Learnt about the heavy influence of the Chinese Ming Dynasty on the Nguyễn Dynasty. The knowledgeable guide shared juicy gossips of the 17 vietnamese kings, how the Việt cộng, the French, the Americans played their part in contributing to the destruction of the vietnamese forbidden city. The UNESCO folkz are currently working on the restoration of the remaining parts of the citadel. After the day trip, we learnt that the vietnamese language has 6 intonations & 6 different meanings for each 'word', vs the chinese which has 4. We also learnt that the chief architect of the Forbidden City in Beijing was a Vietnamese, and how the áo dài was designed the way it is ... a combination of the Chinese Cheongsam & the wide ChangAm costume.
Hội An. Another UNESCO World Heritage site. It used to be a busy trading port. Love the quaint old architecture. There's this famous "Japanese Covered Bridge" with a mix of Japanese-Chinese influence in its design. Totally obsessed with the CoLoRFuL LaNTeRNS!! =) There are many tailor shops and their turnaround time for a dress is ~2hrs. Impressive. There also nice cafes playing cool jazzy french music... quite a nice way to relax and enjoy the vietnamese coffee. Nice! =)
