Civil Society

Heard on Class 95 this morning that Another man got killed on the mrt track again last evening. A few weeks ago, a man committed suicide by jumping onto the track and was killed by the oncoming train. The media ran stories on the deceased who was driven by poverty to make such drastic decision to end his life. By the end of the funeral, his widow collected s$500,000 in donations fr the public. This saga drew comments fr various quarters.

All the hooha triggered thots on several underlying sociological issues, but i thot it's kinda superficial wif pple questioning the motives of those who offered to help the poor widow and her 2 teenage kids.

It seems tt we've morphed (read 'Degenerated') into exactly that state described by Alexis de Tocqueville! ... The pathetic state of the civil society where everyone's so dependent to the paternalistic govt. Those interviewed "the govt should do this and that"... Why can't the private individuals initiate the 1st step to help one another? Is this the unintended result of an economic-growth driven nation building policy? -- a nation of materialistic and selfish people reluctant to care for one another, and fear of failure? *shudderz*
