The Dairy Farmer

I always have this picture of a farm in the countryside, with the cows grazing the land lazily... but things are not really that slow moving @ the farm. In reality, these farmers are in serious business, talking about Big Monies globally...
Last year, was given a quick lesson on the lingo used by a particular group of influential dairy farmers:

There were technical terms that zoomed past over me... :P
What is a milk solid? What is the average # of cows per farm? What is the average farm size? What does "AB" mean? what time must milking be completed? How do we pay farmers? what is the average fat percentage for the milk?

All these terminologies were alien to me, a city mouse from S'pore. However, my team won the Quiz! : ) All thanks to Fiona who got most of the Qns correct. Her parents own a Farm, that's why.

But I managed to remember the following... : )
What breed is a black and white cow? : Friesian
What is a brown cow? : Jersey
What is a mixture of the two? : Cross-breed
What do you call a 1st calf milker? : Heifer
What is a Bobby? : 4 day old calf
when do cows calve? : Spring
What is a "Cull"? : Cow to the freezing works
What is an "Empty"? : Cow not in calf, i.e. no more milk

One more thing:
If you are trying to impress these farmers, and wanna dress like them, make sure you wear a pair of Dirty Gumboots! ... Never wear a pair of new gleaming gumboots to their meetings!
