Mahjong (麻將)

The mahjong game (麻將) is not a vice because the good doctors say playing mahjong can help prevent dementia in old age.

It's not an exclusive game for the rich tai-tais (tho' they have the luxury of leisure time, unlike the rest of us). It's actually a game of Statistics (probability, combination) and Strategy (risk analysis) and sometimes involves a lil' bit of luck.

The game has complex rules. After so many years, I still get confused sometimes... can't remember all the rules :P
It's Noisy when you are not acquainted to the game.
It's Anti-Social when you are not one of the 4 players... and they all suddenly become very superstitious.

Every hostelite must learn and master this game in order to qualify that he/she has truly graduated from NUS (or so I was told by my seniors when in uni). Kena conned liao...

Dunno why it can be addictive, as you can be glued to the seat for long hours at a stretch and not feel bored. You trade Gossips at the table, and also get to see a person's True Colors when the players get 'abusive' (verbally) at the table. :P

Well, just one of the many things you do, chilling out with frens @ home. : )
